Specialized Pitch Comp Review
Written by drbob on November 23, 2009 – 1:40 pm -If you frequently tackle rugged or technical terrain, the all-mountain Specialized Pitch Comp is a well-reviewed option. All-mountain bikes are sturdier and more rugged than traditional mountain bikes, and the SpecializedPitch Comp is no exception. With a frame platform based on the top-end Specialized Enduro SL, 6 inches of travel and 2.3-inch-wide tires, this bike is designed to handle everything from steep hills to rugged descents. Although reviewers praise the performance, the Specialized Pitch Comp also gets high marks for value. Multiple reviewers say it's hard to find a mountain bike with this level of performance at this price. Their biggest complaint? There's no shock lockout to fine-tune the ride for level terrain. For rugged terrain,... more

Trek 3900 Review
Written by drbob on November 23, 2009 – 1:34 pm -Updated June 2009 It's not the most rugged mountain bike, but reviewers say it's hard to beat the Trek 3900 for beginners on a budget. This aluminum-framed mountain bike is a hardtail bike, so there is no suspension in the rear, and only asmall amount of travel (just over 3 inches) in the front. The Trek 3900 is designed for light off-road use on dirt and gravel trails, and reviewers say you shouldn't expect to take this bike off jumps or over rugged and technical terrain. This mountain bike earns high marks for a rigid frame and smooth shifting, but experts recommend spending a little extra to upgrade to disc brakes, which offer more reliable braking in dirt and mud, on the Trek 3900 Disc (MSRP: $480). Overall, reviewers say this bike is a... more

Kestrel RT700 Review
Written by drbob on November 16, 2009 – 11:47 pm -by John Bradley Twenty-one years after introducing the world's first all-carbon production frame, Kestrel continues to put a premium on stiffness and aerodynamics. But unlike true aero bikes, the RT700 loves to climb and descend; plus it's comfy enough for long-haul speed. And, damn, doesn't it look good on the rack? Because Kestrel engineers designed the RT700's fork in-house—instead of outsourcing it, as many companies do—they were able to take into account the rest of the bike's specific geometry and handling characteristics. You can tell. The RT700 was the most agile and responsive bike we tested this year. The RT700 isn't as aerodynamic as Kestrel's tri-specific bikes, but its shaped tubes and airfoil-like seat tube still slice through... more

Cannondale SystemSix Liquigas Review
Written by drbob on November 16, 2009 – 11:43 pm -By Paul Vincent Cannondale's System Six Liquigas is a tour de force of US-made frame excellence coupled with great components and fine looks. The US-built, carbon/aluminium co-moulded flagship SystemSix is designed for riders who want something stiffer and even more exciting than the once range-topping Six-13. We'll find out whether this new lower price pointed version sets a new benchmark for value. Frame Producing an entirely US-made product to meet the needs of a partisan American consumer, when everyone else is sourcing from much cheaper Taiwan, is no mean feat for Cannondale. The entire production of their SystemSix frame is carried out in-house, where a CAAD 9-welded, aluminium rear triangle is mated to high modulus carbon top-tube, head-tube... more

Kona Dawg Deluxe Review
Written by drbob on November 16, 2009 – 11:29 pm -By Guy Kesteven Kona’s suspension bikes have always rewarded their fans with some of the longest lifespans around. The new 6in Dawgs are faithful friends in the most inhospitable terrain, but there’s deinitely no whippet in their bloodline. Ride & handling: totally dependable long-travel cruiser that’ll take everything in its lazy stride With its ultra reliable, chaos-calming suspension, plenty of cockpit room and relatively light weight, the Dawg will be a truly faithful backcountry friend for years to come. However, flexy wheels and steady character make it happier walking placidly to heel rather than chasing sticks. While the sub-30lb weight is commendable for a 6in bike, the longer linkages make it more of an effort-eater than... more

Giant Trinity Alliance Review
Written by drbob on November 16, 2009 – 10:14 pm -By Mat Brett The Trinity Alliance is the middle option in the triathlon range from Taiwanese giants Giant, sitting between the aluminium framed Trinity (£1200) and the tricked-out carbon composite Trinity Advanced (£3250). The Alliance splits the difference with a frame that fuses carbon and aluminium. A female-specific version is available too – the Aeryn Alliance W (£2000). Ride & Handling: steady rather than super speedy With an all-up weight of 9.2kg the Giant is a little portly, but while it's not lightning-quick out of the blocks, it accelerates just fine. Those deep tubes hold the bottom bracket good and tight so when you’re jumping up and down on the cranks to wind up the speed, all your effort is converted straight into... more

Bianchi 928 C2C 105 Review
Written by drbob on November 16, 2009 – 9:44 pm -By Mat Brett The £1300 price point is one of the most popular among bike buyers and consequently the manufacturers all want a big slice of the action. Bianchi is no exception and makes a play for your unlucky ton with the 928 C2C 105. Frame: the Lurpak effect Bianchi's carbon monocoque frame is supremely comfortable, dissipating road vibration almost completely to produce a butter-smooth ride. With its curved down-tube, another slight arc in the top-tube and barely a round profile in sight, it's one that passers-by like to stop and look when you break for a mid-ride cuppa. Bianchi makes much of the 928's high head-tube and the relaxed ride position it has produced, but the front end is actually the lower than many of its competitors. In fact,... more
